Helen F. Slowinski

Helen F. Slowinski

Helen Slowinski, age 96, passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family on February 10th, 2023.

Born May 13, 1926 to the late Joseph and Marie Kilianski, Helen grew up in Milwaukee with her sisters, Dolores, Irene and Ruth. In her late-teen years, she worked as a spinner at Phoenix Hosiery where she made parachutes for the troops during WW2. She met the love of her life, Joseph William Sr. after they were set up on a blind date by friends at the local dance hall. They married in 1945 and together raised 5 children, Sharon (d. 1950), Judith (Joe) Pope, Joseph Jr. (Nancy), Stan (Sandy), and Stephen. She went on to work at Dainty Bakery (a favorite of the kids because of the sweet treats she brought home) and 1st Wisconsin Bank. Saturday nights at home were filled with love and homemade meals and always ended with a dance in the kitchen while Judy played accordion. Helen and Joe were married for 33 beautiful years before he passed in 1979. We can’t help but smile knowing they’re dancing the Polka together again.

Helen was a longtime parishioner and active member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. She read scripture, decorated for the holidays, and cooked church dinners, all for her community. She enjoyed gardening, baking, sending her visitors home with too much food, and playing card games on her patio. She was kind, humble, and truly selfless.

If you knew Helen, even for just the briefest of moments, you were lucky enough to experience true compassion. Her generosity was limitless (just ask us about her Christmas cookies) and her light was always pure and bright. She had a constant air of optimism that seemed to make your deepest troubles disappear. Her home was an open door to all including her beloved grandkids, Nick (Megan), Matthew, Sara, and Ben (Alex) and great-grandkids, Jordan, Owen, and Devin as well as her many nieces, nephews and friends. She will be deeply missed by so many.

Thank you to the incredibly kind team at Comfort Keepers and Compassus Care for treating our mom like yours. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 17, 2023 from 12:30 PM-1:45 PM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 2114 W. Mitchell St., Milwaukee, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 2 PM. Private interment Wood National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

You were our mom, our grandma, our busia, and our best friend. We love you. We miss you. Na zdrowie!
